Popular and Delicious Ice Cream Flavors
Who doesn’t love ice cream? It’s a favorite food of all cultures, just like pizza.
Ice cream can be made from almost any ingredient, so there are literally thousands to choose from. Some are more traditional than others.
We were in Oaxaca, Mexico recently and had the opportunity to sample grasshopper ice cream. Seriously.
This is not a scoop of ice-cream topped with toasted grasshoppers. Although you couldn’t actually taste the grasshoppers, they were mixed into the ice-cream so that you wouldn’t be able to see them. This unusual combination of sweet, salty, spicy, and sweet was not for everyone.
We love trying new flavors, but we still prefer the classics. Here are 25 of our favourite ice cream flavors. While some of these may not be as interesting as squid-ink ice cream, they are definitely the best.
Balut ice-cream will be left for another list, I think.
THE MOST POPULAR FRESH ICE CREAM FLAVORS
- Vanilla Ice Cream
This is an obvious choice. Vanilla is the most loved ice cream flavor so it makes sense to begin this list with vanilla. Although it isn’t the most sexy flavor, it’s certainly one of the most versatile and delicious.
Vanilla ice cream, made from vanilla bean is delicious by itself but it is also a great choice for desserts a la carte. We’ve had many delicious desserts such as apple pie, brownies and pisang goreng.
- Chocolate Ice Cream
You can’t list the best flavors of icecream without chocolate, just like vanilla and strawberry.
Although vanilla may be the most well-known flavor, chocolate ice cream is still the original. It could be the first ever ice cream flavor in the world. Popular drinks such as tea, coffee, and hot chocolate were first to be frozen in Europe in the 17th century.
Chocolate ice cream is made from cocoa powder, eggs, cream, sugar and vanilla. Although all types of chocolate ice-cream are delicious, we prefer dark chocolate. Dark chocolate’s richness and bitterness is simply divine.
Chocolate ice cream can be used to make vanilla or neapolitan flavors.
- Strawberry Ice Cream
Strawberry is the final flavor in the holy trinity, a simple yet delicious ice cream flavor. You can make it with strawberry flavoring, but the best ice creams are made with fresh strawberries mixed in with eggs and cream.
Haagen-Dazs strawberry ice cream is my favorite. I have never tried a Haagen Dazs flavor that I didn’t like. It’s creamy and delicious.
- Chocolate Chip
Vanilla ice cream with chocolate chips is basically chocolate chip icecream.
Chocolate chip ice cream was my first love when I arrived in America to study at school. This ice cream flavor was not available in my home country of the Philippines, so I was fascinated by the chocolate bits in the icecream!
Vanilla can be bland, even though it’s delicious. However, the chocolate chips add a little chocolate flavor to the ice cream.
Is it possible that something so universally delicious as ice cream can be fraught with controversy? Some people don’t believe chocolate and mint should be combined, just like pizza. But that is exactly what you get with every scoop of mint chocolate chips ice cream.
This refreshing mix of mint and chocolate is a detractors’ favorite flavor. It tastes almost like toothpaste. It isn’t my favorite flavor of ice cream, but it is mine!
- Butter Pecan
Butter pecan ice-cream is a rich, buttery and nutty flavor that is popular in the US. It is vanilla ice cream with whole pecans and browned butter. Do I need to say more?
- Matcha
Matcha is a favorite of ours. It is a Japanese delight that we enjoy every time we travel to Japan, particularly in Kyoto.
Matcha is a finely ground powder from green tea leaves. Matcha is an important component of Japanese tea ceremonies. It’s also a common ingredient in many Japanese food products, such as cookies, crackers and candy. It has an earthy and grassy flavor, which is difficult to describe.
Matcha soft cream is delicious, but I prefer green tea ice-cream. Matcha soft cream (soft-serve ice cream) can be enjoyed anywhere in Japan, but Uji is where it’s at its best. It’s a small town located between Kyoto and Nara. Matcha ice cream is a must-have in Japan.
- Eggnog
I spent most of my childhood in America, and eggnog was one of my favourite things about the country. It was a Christmas tradition for me to have my first taste of eggnog. I thought, “What in heaven’s Name is this magical creation?” It tastes exactly like liquid ice cream em>
This ice cream is sure to please eggnog lovers. It tastes just like ice cream, so it makes perfect sense to use it as ice-cream!
As an aside, make sure you try Rompope Ice Cream if ever you visit Mexico. Rompope basically refers to Mexican eggnog.
- Teaberry
Another popular ice cream flavor is teaberry, which is a favorite in the US, mainly in Pennsylvania. Its bright pink color would make you think it was Pepto Bismol, but it is actually made with teaberries, which are a pea-sized, crimson-colored fruit that is native to New England.
The teaberry is a highly polarizing fruit. Teaberry ice cream is a polarizing fruit. It tastes like mint chocolate chip but has a minty, almost medicinal taste that people love or hate.
Although teaberry-based products aren’t as common as they used to be, teaberry ice cream is something you should try on your next Pennsylvania trip. You can either love it or hate it. But at least you can say you tried it.
- Neapolitan
Three of the most loved ice cream flavors are strawberry, chocolate and vanilla. It makes perfect sense to combine them into this creamy Neapolitan Ice Cream. It contains three of the most iconic flavors in one container.
Neapolitan Ice Cream was created in the 19th Century. Its name is derived from the presumed origin of Naples. Italian immigrants brought their frozen-dessert-making skills to the US and created this three-flavor combination to resemble the Italian flag.
There are many tubs of ice-cream made with more than one flavor, but Neapolitan Ice Cream was the first to combine three flavors.
- Moose Tracks
The US is a huge market for ice cream manufacturing. You’ll see branded flavors such as Cherry Garcia or Phish Food. Ben & Jerry’s is the most famous flavor, but Denali Flavors also makes Moose Tracks.
Moose Tracks is vanilla ice cream with peanut butter cups or brownie bits and their signature Moose Tracks fudge. It can also be made with chocolate or mint ice cream.
